Ask:

Introduction

When you listen to the radio, Pandora.com, your phone, you realize that there is a wide variety of music genres and many lyrics that might have roots in older music, music that your grandparents or great grandparents listened to. How and when did these songs originate? What do they say about you and your culture? Can you find some commonalities? Can you identify traits of your history and culture in them?

Ask:

  • What are the music genres of your culture?
  • Can you name some famous songwriters, singers and musicians of the past and present?
  • Who brought these different kinds of music to the US and when?
  • What do the lyrics say aboutyour heritage?
  • What are some hits from earlier decades?
  • How does yesterday’s music differ from today’s music?
