Biography Report

Research an individual using both books and online resources. You will look for information on their early life, education and adulthood as well as challenges and major accomplishments. You can search for books in our library catalog, search World Book Online and use the online sources below.

Later in the year we will be learning how to cite our sources. That means keeping track of where we found our information and providing imortant publication infomormation about our sources at the end of the report. Please read the citing sources box in the center column.

Paraphrasing

Remeber when we are writing a research report we don't want to plagiarize. Plagiarizing is when someone copies someone else's writing from a book, magazine or website for their own writing. How do we avoid plagiarizing? By paraphrasing. Paraphrasing is rewriting something using your own words. Here is an example:

Exact Words when using an authors exact words we put quotation marks around them to show it is someone else's writing.

"Frederick was an intelligent young man and wanted to learn to read. Over time, he secretly taught himself to read and write by observing others and watching the white children in their studies."

Paraphrase below is a paraphrase or rewriting the author's original words.

Frederick was very smart and really wanted to learn to read. By watching the white children do their school work he was able to teach himself how to read without anyone knowing.
